While tricycling peasants gossiped about the escaped hammer murderer, Mrs Ho had her home razed in exchange for a job and Mrs Ping’s husband ran off with the noodle seller. Chang Wen plotted vainly to turn himself from a scholar to a businessman, while Lou Da preyed on spoiled youngsters from the countryside. Amongst hawkers, prostitutes, and signs bearing the futile request ‘Visit politely, please’, the material girls and boys of the one child generation - the author's students - searched to find their niche in this Hangzhou, the city of heaven. In a year of China, from the Korean border to the Himalaya, the author met hawking police officers and nationalist tea planters; subversive abbots and pro-democracy communists; drunken sages, indestructible porters, terrorist tour guides. One thing was certain Change would cease for none of them.

If you are interested in modern life in China or China from a Westerner's perspective then this is a must read. Declaration of interest: I've never been to China but I have Chinese in-laws so that was my main motivator in reading the book - to try to better understand their world. This is the account of a year spent by an English guy and his French girlfriend teaching English in China. In the course of their adventures they travelled extensively around China and the author does an incredible job of describing and capturing the sights and sounds of the amazingly diverse landscapes and cultures of China. He describes his daily interactions with his Chinese colleagues and local characters in a way that is fair to his perspective and to their perspective.
The only problem I have with the book is that it is written in a very academic or reportage style manner, e.g. the author recounts interactions between himself and Chinese people but completely leaves it up to the reader to interpret what to make of these interactions. It is very carefully written to be as objective as possible so that it can come across as quite a detached and passionless read. I understand the author's sensibilities in this regard and, despite the fact that I found the writing somewhat dry at times I nevertheless was eager to return to reading it. It is very well written. It's just that it probably wouldn't be engaging to anyone who wasn't really interested in China specifically.
If you are interested in doing adventure travelling in China then this book will definitely blow you away in its descriptions of famous places - in fact I regretted that I didn't make much more use of the kindle highlight and notes features so that I could refind some of the places the author visits and look them up on google earth (for example he seems to have visited the place featured in one of the last scenes in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon where one of the protagonists launches into the clouds).
If you are interested in understanding the differing perspectives of Westerners and Chinese then you will certainly be interested in reading this book though you will have to think about it all because the author does not give you a predigested perspective.

On Heaven Lake A Year in New China eBook Justin HempsonJones Reviews
The author wonderfully depicts an image of China up-close and personal as he sees it throughout a year spent teaching there.. It's definitely not your run of the mill travel literature but instead gets right under the skin of the weird and wonderful characters that he meets. Definitely recommend!!
